Palm Tree Skinning

Skinning refers to the act of removing dead remains of fronds from a tree trunk. Many palm owners believe in a misconception that palm skinning helps them grow but instead, it leads to stunt growth. These fronds protect the tree from severe cold winter. It is important to note that palm tree should only be skinned if the fronds pose a hazard to people or property, are broken or dead or if the tree is flowering and bearing fruits.

Steps
  • Evaluate the health of your palm tree. Look out for dying or dead fronds on the tree. Dying fronds are white, brownish or yellow in color and often hanging or wilted.
  • Look out for broken fronds which should be removed before being torn off which can cause damage to the tree.
  • Select the appropriate equipment. A serrated knife should be used to cut off fronds less than one inch in diameter. A pruning or hand saw for larger fronds and chainsaw for very thick fronds. For climbing, step stools or small ladder for short tree and extension ladder for taller trees. Cleats and climbing spikes should not be used because they can spread diseases and damage the trunk. Gloves should be worn to protect hands from the sharp spikes on fronds. Goggles can also be worn for protection against flying debris.
  • Sterilize and clean skinning tools before use. Bleach and water should do.
  • Set up all climbing gear. Ensure ladders and stools are stable and secure; they should also not bend or puncture the tree.
  • Remove dying, dead or broken fronds only. Mature fronds are located below the current year’s growth. Leave at least two rows of the mature fronds.
  • Start from the foliage’s bottom. Cut off each frond 5 centimeters from the trunk since cutting too close to the trunk can damage it.
  • Green fronds should be cut if the hang by more than 90 degrees from the trunk
  • Loose petioles from the fronds should also be pulled off by placing them in between the fingers and pulling gently.
  • Finally, properly discard the fronds debris which can prick the handler.

It is vital to note that green fronds produce the palm tree’s food. It is important to keep them around for a healthier palm tree. Wait for another year before skinning the tree again.
