Las Vegas Palm Tree TrimmingPalm trees are a common sight in Las Vegas; in fact, these are the most common trees tree care companies trim in the area.
Palm trees are usually trimmed once a year, most specifically when it is done bearing seeds. Most people want their palm trees trimmed before the seeds start to fall out because when they do, they don’t only become hazards on the pathway but could also look messy and worst, the seeds could create stains on the pavement. WHEN TO TRIM Palm trees are best trimmed sometime around May to August because this is the season when the palm trees have grown their seeds. Some tree care companies recommend trimming between May and June because the date stocks by that time are only ripe enough not to fall off by themselves and it would be easier to chop them off. If the seeds ripen, it will grow heavier and will easily fall off the ground before a tree worker can start trimming. Other tree service companies however, said it is best to trim palms between July and August. WAYS OF TRIMMING PALM Each tree care company has their own way of trimming palms, the most common of which is cutting off all the seeds and the old branches. On the other hand, some palm tree growers want to cut off 90 percent of the branches leaving around a couple or a few more branches on top of the tree. Either way, the health of the palm tree will not be affected. However, it has been said that it is perfect to trim off the palm seeds as soon as they are produced because they affect the overall wellbeing of the palm tree. Reports have it that a palm tree pours all of its energy into the seeds to make sure these are healthy, but in the process the palm’s fronds become dull while others dry out and fall off, signifying that the tree’s energy has been sucked into the seeds. TYPES OF PALM TREE Las Vegas is home to four different types of palm trees: the Mexican Fan Palm, California Palm Tree, Canary Date Palm, and the Date Palm. The Mexican Fan Palm otherwise known as Washingtonia Robusta, which has tall and slender trunk. This type of palm tree can grow to as high as 75 feet. Fan palms are believed to be tolerant of drastic pruning. The second type is California Palm Tree, which is also known as Washingtonia Falifera. It shares the same characteristics as the Mexican Fan Palm but they are larger in diameter and not as tall. The Canary Date Palm or the Phoenix Canariensis is considered the third most common palm tree in Las Vegas. The Date Palm or Phoenix Dactylifera , also known as feather palm has a rough trunk that measures about 18 inches in diameter. It can grow as high as 60 feet. This type of palm tree is less tolerant to drastic pruning and better left as full as it can get. |
