Stump Grinding

Stump Grinding- Back To The Grind!

Before we begin discussing anything about stump grinding, we must first know what it actually is.

You must be familiar with the fact that people sometimes have to cut trees down. That might happen for several reasons, but just cutting it down isn’t the end of the story. It might appear like everything is level now but you can’t cut the trunk from the ground level.

This means that once that’s done, there’s a stump sticking out from the roots which you can’t move either because it’s holding on to the roots.

What to do then? Well, this is when you have to grind down the stump to make the whole place plain again (without the stump poking out of the ground).

Oh! So how do they grind the stump?

Sump grinding is usually with a machine known as the stump grinder. There are several stump grinder models from several companies from sizes as small a vacuum cleaner up to as large as a truck.

These machines have a powered rotating disk with a blade. This actually chips away the wood once it comes into contact with it while in motion. Thus, gradually, it erodes (chips) the remaining part of the trunk away. This is comparable to a chainsaw, actually, the way that it rotates with a blade-edge.

Oh! That’s good and all, but why’s stump grinding so special?

If you’re cutting down the tree to use the place for some other purpose, you have to first level the whole place. With even a single stump still sitting there, you can’t really do anything.

So in order to utilize the area, it’s important to make it completely clear. In fact, this stump grinding thing is so related to the cutting of the tree that people calculate both of the costs together as the cost to cut down the tree.

Can I do it myself or do I have to hire someone?

Well, since it’s done with a machine and those are available for everyone to buy, of course you can do it yourself. Alternatively, you might also get someone with experience in it to get the best results (yes, of course that would cost a bit more).

However, it is usually recommended that you hire someone. First of all, if you’re just going to do it a few times, buying the machine might prove to be a loss financially. Secondly, they are actually more experienced at this and so might be able to do it better than you. In a case like that, it’d be a better idea to hire them.

The main thing: How much am I looking at?

The financial factor, after all, is always important. While it might be something you’re eager to do, you might have to wait for a while if you are on a budget that’s too conservative for now.

Typically, without going into figures, it depends on the size of the stump and whom you hire. A larger stump usually costs more to grind since it requires more efforts and a larger company usually charges more because that’s just fashion.

The Conclusion

So, at the end of the day, it’s once again a question of what your specific situation is. Based on that, you must choose the right way to do it within your budget.

However, since it’s a regular thing, it can be done for quite affordable rates if you aren’t hesitant to look around for a bit first. So, do your research and get the most out of your money!

How to preserve and protect a tree

5/27/2017

Tree preservation and protection is not only good for landscaping but also for the environment. With the increased global warming, we need trees more than ever. It is advisable to start the process at the initial stage of constructing a homestead. Before construction, walk the site with a certified arborist to assess the trees you wish to save and let him or her evaluate their general health. Choose the healthiest and let them be marked on the construction plan. Make sure that all constructions are done outside canopies of the tree to avoid damage. Compaction is also a silent tree killer, this can be caused by heavy machinery around construction sites such as vehicles, and compaction kills the trees by crushing roots. You can also put a tree protection clause in your construction contract that will bind constructors from damaging your trees. Trees can also be preserved and protected by;
  1. Staking and guying trees. This is the process of providing external anchorage to trees with weak structures. Young developing trees have a weak trunk that can be supplemented by staking. This will protect them from external interference from factors such as strong winds.
  2. Fencing. Introducing a fence of wire mesh around trees help protect them from both human and animal interference. Children may accidentally break young trees while playing or animals such as a cow can also feed on them. Fences will help prevent such interference.
  3. Spraying trees with pesticides. Spraying will keep away both rodents and pests which feed on trees
  4. Irrigation. Irrigation can supplement the little rain received in dry areas. It protects trees from drying up.
  5. Mulching. Mulching can be used in dry areas to prevent excessive evaporation of moisture from the ground. It can also protect young trees from rodents by obstruction.
  6. Straightening wind-thrown trees. Pushing the back to their initial position then anchoring them for support can save wind-thrown trees.

How Drought and heat damage trees

5/27/2017

Picture
Water is a very vital element for tree growth. Just like living things, trees need water for survival, insufficient water leads to stunted growth or even death of a tree. A certain range of temperature is or crucial for tree survival. Too much heat or cold is unhealthy for trees. Drought is associated with lack of, or little rain, below are the different ways on how drought damages trees. If you'd like to talk to a tree specialist after reading this articles, you can always visit www.lasvegastreetrimmers.com

How Does Drought Damage Trees
  1. Damage and loss of roots. As moisture evaporates, feeder roots on the upper level of the soil shrink and are eventually lost. Loss of moisture from the soil also causes shrinking and heaving which cause physical damage to the roots. Eventually, the whole tree will dry up.
  2. Leaves of affected tree start turning brown gradually from the edges to the center, thereafter, the plant assumes a scorched look. Smaller plants with shallow roots are the first to be affected before those with deep roots. Larger trees and shrubs tend to show a sudden onset of browning of all leaves.
  3. Stunted growth. Drought inhibits the general growth of trees; those that survive do not grow to their normal size.

How Heat Damages Trees

Trees have a way of adapting to an increase in the surrounding heat level. This is just for a while, if the heat is consistent, it eventually damages the tree.
  1. Melting of cell membranes. Cell membranes consist of lipids that are melted if a plant is exposed to extreme heat for a long duration of time. Enzymes and proteins are also deactivated and denatured. Eventually, the whole tree dies.
  2. Excessive evapotranspiration. Excessive heat increases the rate of water loss from the leaves to a point when a tree shuts down its stomata to prevent more water loss. Closed stomata hinder the intake of carbon dioxide which is essential for food manufacture.
  3. Wilting. Excess heat increases the rate of transpiration to a point when a tree is left with a little water for survival. Such trees appear dull with drooped or sagging leaves or stems.

Tree Transplanting

Picture
Tree transplanting involves digging up a tree and installing it at a new location. As much as it appears easy, if the proper procedure is not adhered to then the tree will definitely die. The equipment required for the process are; mulch, garden horse, tarps pointed shovels and a measuring tape.

Instructions
  • Location. Before transplanting you should determine if the tree will flourish in a shade, sun or watery location. Do not transplant a plant that craves for water near one that flourishes in dry conditions for compatibility purposes.
  • Dig a new hole before uprooting the tree you plan to transplant.
  • Use the tape measure to measure both the depth and width of the root ball. This can be done by digging around the plant.
  • Dig out the plant that you plan to transplant. This should be done cautiously to avoid cutting most of the roots. Few can be cut using a sharp shovel or pruner
  • Once the soil is loose around the roots, spread a tarp beside the tree and gently move it into the tarp.
  • Gently drag the tree using the tarp as a medium of transportation to the new hole, the slide it into the hole. Make sure the tree stands straight then shovel the excavated soil into the hole. Tamp the soil firmly as you water it to eliminate air pockets which can cause the tree to shift in position after transplant.
  • Mound the soil around the transplanted tree in a ring into a berm that will catch water for easier irrigation.
  • Finally, spread the mulch around the base of the tree leaving a distance of about 5 centimeters between the mulch and tree for aeration. This should keep rodents away.

Please note that younger trees have the highest chance of survival. Large tree with deep roots should not be transplanted for they will die. The best season for transplanting is during early spring or late winter when the weather is favorable.
