Tree stumps are often discarded due to various reasons, these include; for safety, space and landscaping. It is important to assess a stump before removing it. This will enable you to choose the appropriate techniques and methods according to the stump size. A stump’s age and size are the determining factors when it comes to removal. Old and small stumps are easier to remove compared to large and mature ones.

1. Removing a Stump by Hand

Tools required are; a chainsaw, pick mattock, shovel, ax, digging bar, chain and a four wheel drive truck

Steps
  • Remove any lower branches from the trunk using a chainsaw
  • Cut off the top section of the trunk using an ax
  • Use a pick mattock, shovel and digging bar to dig in order to expose the stump roots.
  • Cut the roots with an ax
  • Try pushing the stump until it is uprooted, if not, keep cutting the roots till it gets loose.
  • You can also tie the chain on the truck and stump the pull it out.

2. Chemical Stump Remover and Killer

You will need potassium nitrate, a drill, chainsaw and an ax.

You will need; a chainsaw, potassium nitrate, a drill, shovel, scarp wood, hot water

Steps
  • Use the chainsaw to cut the upper exposed part of the stump.
  • Drill 1 inch holes on the upper surface and sides till they meet at a 45 degrees angle.
  • Pour potassium nitrate into the holes and feel them with water.
  • Wait till the stump becomes spongy, this might take six weeks.
  • Use an ax to break it.

3. Burning a stump

You will need; a chainsaw, potassium nitrate, a drill, shovel, scarp wood, hot water and a lighter.

Steps
  • Drill about 10 inch deep holes at the center of the stump
  • Fill them halfway with potassium nitrate
  • Pour hot water into the stump till the potassium nitrate dissolves.
  • Place scarp wood on top of the stump, light them and let the stump burn.
  • Use a shovel to break any remaining pieces.
  • Fill the hole with soil.

4. Rotting the Stump.

You will need; a drill, high nitrogen substance, and water

Steps
  • Drill 10 inch deep holes into the stump
  • Fill the holes with the high nitrogen substance
  • Pour water into the holes
  • As the stump softens, chip it off.
  • Fill the remaining hole with soil.

5. Grinding the stump away.

You can rent a grinder for about $200. You will also need a shovel, mattock, chainsaw and rake.

Steps
  • Use a shovel or mattock to clear stones around the stump.
  • Use the chainsaw to cut off the stump as much as possible.

There's some good advice here. Usually a professional stump removal company would either take the whole thing out by the roots with a crane or make use of stump grinding.

You can choose stump grinding services instead, which essentially grind down the stump so that it is level to the ground or slightly below the soil.

My uncle just moved into his new home, and there is a stump out front that he wants to get rid of it. He would really like to get some help from a professional because they will have the right equipment. I liked what you said about how the stump will come free when there aren't any roots attached because they can be cut off with an ax.

Our local government started to cut down trees that hinder the sidewalk. Now I know here that there are several ways you can remove the stump such as using chemicals like potassium nitrate and waiting six months before doing anything else. But, I might just have it grinded since most of these methods require you to wait long periods of time.

The stump removal process is intensive and intrusive. It entails ripping out the bulky tree stump with a high powered machine and digging up the tree’s root system.
