Trimming Tips and Techniques

Tree trimming or pruning is a technic that requires both skill and knowledge for the desired results. Some of the reasons for trimming include; maintaining a tree’s shape and appearance, human safety and saving an infected tree by strategically pruning all limbs and branches affected by diseases. Pruning tools include; secateurs for young branches vines and flowers, loppers for branches up to 3 inches thick, pruning saws for branches up to 5 inches thick’ hedge shears for hedges and pole pruners for dead wood. Before embarking on the trimming process, it’s essential that one understands the vital tips for proper pruning.

General tips include;
  • Size of the branch- Pruning should only be done if the branch size is less than 10 centimeters. If a branch exceeds 10 centimeters, do so if you really have a good reason but remember it might interfere with the growth of the whole tree.
  • Dormant season- It is advisable to trim a tree during the summer and spring season when little growth is taking place.
  • Kind of branches- Only prune weak and preferably V-shaped branches and retain U-shaped strong branches which are depended upon by the entire tree for balance and photosynthesis.
  • Prune away young branches which are much easier to maintain as compared to the fully grown.
  • Try to evenly prune lateral branches at the crown for a better appearance, particularly on young trees.

Pruning can further be subdivided into crown thinning, crown raising and crown reduction. Crown thinning is the reduction of the number of lateral branches by pruning away those that cross each other. Crown raising is achieved by trimming the lower branches for various reasons such as providing clearance to pedestrians while crown reduction simply means reducing the size of a tree’s crown.

Trimming Technique
  • Identify branch collar located at the bottom base of the stem
  • Cut down, outside and away from both the branch bark ridge so as not to interfere with the branch collar
  • Do so for both dead and living branches.

Tree Trimming Cost

For an attractive landscape, one should consider tree trimming. Trimming cost depends on; the kind of trees or shrubs, tree service required and the kind of location (Residential or Business). This can range from $10 to $30 per tree or branch. Knowing tree trimming basics can help one handle the process without necessarily employing the experts.

Wow, I never knew that cutting a branch that is over 10 centimeters could hinder the growth of the tree. I am preparing for spring by trimming my trees this weekend. I appreciate the tips on lopping and trimming trees.

It's interesting that the best time to trim a tree is during the summer and spring season when little growth is taking place. My mom wants to trim her trees because they're beginning to grow over the sidewalk and there are some low-hanging branches that she wants to get rid of. I think it would probably be best if she had a professional come over and take care of it so that it looks as nice as possible.

A lot of techniques and tricks of the trade! I always suggest folks contacting their local arborist or having a tree service come take a look to advise what's best.

I never took into account the fact that there is a certain length that the branches should be trimmed since it can affect the growth of the tree. I guess I will just hire professionals to handle this since I am not knowledgeable about this, and I don't want the tree in our backyard to not bear fruits anymore. This is because it has been with us even before I was born since this property was from my grandparents, so I value it a lot.

I like your tip about pruning weak and V-shaped branches. That makes sense considering they would fall off or grow irregularly. I'll have to consider getting a tree service to determine whether or not I have strong branches.

Thank you for your tip to trim the trees during the dormant season. My wife noticed that the trees in our front yard have some dead branches and we want to increase our curb appeal, so we need to get those branches trimmed. I'll be sure to talk to a tree service company about the best time to do so.

I didn't know ten centimeters is the cut off for pruning. There is an apple tree in my backyard that's not giving great apples because there are too many branches crisscrossing. I'll have to look into professional tree pruning.

I'm grateful for your advice on how to properly trim trees. There is a tree in my yard that is getting overgrown. It would probably be best to let a professional trim it for me.

I'm glad you mentioned that it is important to avoid cutting branches too short when pruning a tree because that can affect its growth. There are a couple of trees in my front yard that needs to be pruned, but I am worried I will hurt them if I were to do it myself. Hiring an arborist will help me avoid damaging my yard.

I appreciate how you suggest trimming a tree during the summer and spring season. My mom told me that one of her trees is almost touching the power lines. I will help her contact a tree company to go trim the tree.

Thank you for telling me that we should start trimming trees during the summer and spring season when there is little growth. My husband wants to attempt trimming just weeks before winter, so I'll tell him not to do it. Also, I'm worried that the act of trimming itself might be dangerous, so I think I'd just call an expert in tree services to handle it.

Thank you for talking about how hiring a certified tree professional can help you rest assured knowing what your trees will be taken care of by someone with the right equipment. I can see how doing some research can help you find a tree company that can help you keep your vegetation healthy and avoid any damages to them and your property. Personally, I would want to make sure I choose a company that has experience with the type of trees I have and who can provide useful advice on how to best help them grow.

My grandparents live on a property with a long line of trees paving the way to their home. They are getting older and need help trimming the trees, so it's nice that you recommended only pruning if the branch is less than 10 cm and to trim during summer and springtime. I'd think that hiring a tree trimming service may be the best option for them.

I like how you suggest trimming your trees during their dormant season so that they can stay healthy throughout the whole year. My sister moved a couple of months ago to a nice house that has a few large trees planted. I will recommend her to contact a tree care company so that they can take care of them.

It's good to know that you should trim your tree in the summer when there's little growth. My sister wants to make sure that the elm tree in her backyard stays healthy this year. I'll share this information with her so that she can look into her options for tree trimmers who can help her with this.

My dad would like to have his trees trimmed because this will help enhance his home's curb appeal, which will be beneficial, just in case he'll sell his property someday. Well, it never occurred to me that tree trimming is advisable during the Summer and Spring season. These are great tips, but maybe hiring a professional service will be a better option.

Thanks for the tip to prune away young branches because of how easy they are to maintain that way. I don't have confidence in myself to trim a tree properly. I'd rather have a professional do it for me so I can just sit back and enjoy the tree itself once it is done.
